Diakui (NT)
|
| | Location | An inland group east and south of the Arafura Swamp and east of the true Goyder River, extending to about the Mitchell Ranges and Koolatong River headwaters; southern boundary near the headwaters of the eastern tributaries of the Goyder River. There are some elements of the usual Australian tribal structure and clans of both moieties are present, as reported by Schebeck (1970 MS). The first two clans listed are of the Dua moiety, the third is Jiritja. Dua moiety: 1. Wagilak (Wagelag, Wawilak, Waurilak, Nunydjulpi, Nundjulpi, Nundjuibi). 2. Manggura (Manggurra). Jiritja moiety: 3. Ritarngu (Ritarungo, Ritharrngu, Ridarngo, Ritar-ingo, Rittarungo, Ritharingau, Ridarngu, Buranad-jini). Earlier writers gave prominence to the Jiritja moiety clan. The strongly rolled median r in this name apparently is more commonly used by women of the tribe; in their speech, the following vowel sound is almost lost. The late Rev. J. C. Jennison supplied data under the name Djikai which at the time could not be reconciled, but now strongly support Schebeck's interpretation of the data. |

This information is reproduced from NB Tindale's Aboriginal Tribes of Australia (1974). Please be aware that much of the data relating to Aboriginal language group distribution and definition has undergone revision since 1974. Please note also that this catalogue represents Tindale's attempt to depict Aboriginal tribal distribution at the time of European contact. |
