Board for Anthropological Research (BAR) photographs
|
| |
This item consists of 27 photographic prints of various Australian Aboriginal individuals. The photographs were taken on BAR expeditions to Hermannsberg, Northern Territory, in 1929; Cockatoo Creek, Northern Territory, in 1931; Mount Liebig, Northern Territory, in 1932; Ernabella, South Australia, in 1933; and Ooldea, South Australia, in 1939. The prints, referred to as individual subject number photographs, depict a number of individuals, male and female, of varying ages, in both frontal and profile views. The photographs also typically feature a small plate bearing the subject's BAR individual subject number. Some of the prints carry annotations on the reverse side detailing the subject's age, their tribe, their BAR individual subject number, and the location at which the photograph was taken. On one of the prints, a profile view of an Australian Aboriginal boy, the number on the plate in the photograph is illegible and there are no annotations, making it difficult to determine when or where the photograph was taken. The individual subject number photographs in this item are duplicates of photographs kept on the BAR data cards (AA 346/4). The individual subject numbers in this group of photographs include E14, E69, G17, G80, H67, I135, I190, O11, O22, O23, O45, and O85. Tindale Tribes: Pitjandjara; Pintubi. These correspond to AIATSIS Tribal/Language Groups: Pintupi; Pitjantjatjara.

Hair-growth data cards
|
| |
This item contains eight folded cards (measuring 53.0x35.0 cm unfolded) bearing printed outlines of the human body (viewed from front and back) and a human head (viewed from the front, the side, and from above). They were printed to record hair growth patterns of subjects interviewed on BAR expeditions. The cards also contain fields for entering subject information, such as name, BAR individual subject number, sex, age, date and location. The printed outlines are marked with hand-drawn hair growth directions and varying degrees of information about the subject. Four of the cards are annotated by JH Gray, the physical anthropologist on a number of BAR expeditions. Three of the cards were completed during the expedition to the Diamantina region of north-east South Australia in 1934, one was completed during the expedition to Mount Liebig in 1932, and two of the cards contain no information indicating where or when they were completed. Two of the cards have been left blank. More information on the subjects whose hair-growth patterns have been recorded here can be found in the BAR data cards (AA 346/4). The relevant individual subject numbers are J11, J33, and J34. Names mentioned in these cards include Tommy Naylon.
