This series includes correspondence with Daisy Bates (1924-1934; see AA 23), Ursula McConnel (1928-1938; see AA 191), Olive Pink (1935-1939) and other correspondence relating to anthropological and medical matters (1923-1968).

Includes material formerly accessioned as AD62, Acc. Nos. 187 and 248.

This series includes the following items:

  1. Folder of correspondence between Olive Pink and Cleland (1935-39), Olive Pink and HM Hale (1936; see AA 124), Olive Pink and TD Campbell (1938; see AA 52). This correspondence relates to numerous topics including the enquiry into the police shooting of an Aboriginal man at Ayers' Rock in 1935, Pink's relationships and conflicts with other anthropologists such as: TGH Strehlow (see AA 316), AP Elkin (see AA 86), A Radcliffe-Brown and CP Mountford (see AA 228)) and Aboriginal matters (Alice Springs, Hermannsburg Mission, Tanami area. Formerly Acc. No. 187.
  2. THIS ITEM CONTAINS RESTRICTED MATERIAL
    Folder of correspondence between Cleland and Daisy Bates (1924-34; see AA 23) on various subjects including customs and lifestyle of the Aboriginal people at Ooldea such as ceremonies, cannibalism, language, material culture, effects of contact with European people along the east-west railway and migration of Aboriginal people into Ooldea from the Great Victoria Desert and the Musgrave, Mann and other mountain ranges of central Australia. In these letters there are references to rockholes and other watersources in the Great Victoria Desert including Boundary Dam, Wandunya (Waldana) and Bunja (Punthanna), references to Aboriginal people at Tarcoola, Immarna, Cook and other sidings along the East-West line and references to other sites in the far west including Pedinga, Eucla, Fowlers Bay, Gibraltar and Koonibba. Bates' letters include references to tribal groups including the Luritcha, Aranda, Wong-ga-i, Wirangu and Mirning. The letters also include references to other anthropologists such as Radcliffe-Brown, Basedow (see AA 22) and Elkin (see AA 86). Note that there is additional Daisy Bates correspondence with Hale (see AA 124), Tindale (see AA 338) and other Museum staff in the Daisy Bates Collection. This folder also includes a letter from EA Colson (see AA 62) at Bloods Creek (SA) on 2 May 1932 providing some information on the 'Antergerina' and 'Pidgeontarra' tribes of the Musgrave Range area.
  3. Folder of correspondence (1928-1938) between Cleland and Ursula McConnel (see AA 191) relating to her studies of Aboriginal people of Cape York Peninsula. Formerly AD62; Acc. No. 248.
  4. Folder of correspondence (1923-1968) including references to Aboriginal health issues, Cleland family history and other topics. Includes postcard from Cleland in London, 19 February 1938, concerning his recent discussion there with Sir Arthur Keith "about our natives", apparently in relation to the proposed "half-caste survey".
