THIS SERIES CONTAINS RESTRICTED MATERIAL
This series comprises films documenting the Board for Anthropological Research (BAR) expeditions throughout Australia between 1926-1966. These films record the scientific field research of the BAR members in their studies of Australian Aboriginal people, their culture, beliefs, relationship to the land and their environment.

Produced for educational purposes and commercially sold and loaned to individuals and institutions as a teaching tool, copies of these films exist in institutions throughout Australia and overseas. All permission to access or use BAR films should be directed to the South Australian Museum Archives (SAMA) Access Officer.

Numerous BAR members were the cinematographer of these films including: TD Campbell (AA 52), FA Jeffrey (AA 155), EO Stocker (AA 311), NB Tindale (AA 338), CP Mountord (AA 228), HK Fry (AA 105), EC Black (AA 31), FJ Fenner (AA 91), HJ Wilkinson (AA 370), JC Dobbie, J Simpson, MJ Barrett, R Edwards (AA 83), H Beyron and AA Abbie (AA 688). All BAR films previously accessioned into these collections have been transferred into the BAR film collection.

The film collection consists of 35mm nitrate film and 16mm acetate safety film. In 1979 the SAMA deposited its nitrate films with the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) for cold storage. The complex history of the nitrate films has been documented in Correspondence and Research folders (AA 346/9/27/9/1-3). The SAMA Master Preservation Tapes contains the best quality copies from both NFSA and SAMA film collections.

The film series has been ordered chronologically by BAR Expedition, with the exception of films made at Yuendumu and Haasts Bluff between 1951-1965. A number of the films produced by TD Campbell during these years includes footage shot between the years 1956-1958. Primary resource material on these films is very few so the decision was made to follow the old BAR film catalogue order of C1-C11, followed by partly processed films.

Note that not all BAR expeditions have films and that some BAR expeditons have numerous film titles.

Up until 1950 all BAR films are black and white, silent with intertitles. After 1950 all BAR films are colour, silent or colour with sound.

In the time coded summary all film intertitles have been italicised and are within quotation marks. All spelling within intertitles have been left as originally spelt. Language and terms which reflect the author's attitude or that of the period in which the item was produced may be considered inappropriate today.

The method adopted by BAR expeditions to undertake research and record the results involved assigning a unique number to each individual (here called 'individual subject number'). This number was given the expedition symbol as a prefix, and remained consistent throughout the research. Each expedition was assigned the symbol, and individuals recorded during that expedition were assigned an individual subject number, for example [C2]. Where possible the name and 'individual subject number' of those who appear in film have been noted and can be used to cross-reference information relating to a named individual across different Board for Anthropological Research series, expeditions and related collections.

To facilitate further research the film summaries also contain reference to associated SAMA collections, for example TD Campbell (AA 52), and SAM Registry numbers, for example the canoe made during the Harvard Adelaide film is noted as SAM Registry number (A27479).

Wilgena and Ooldea, South Australia, 1926. Copy of 'NFSA Title No. 34189.'

This is the first of three film items and is the final film production 'Scenes of Aboriginal Life' documenting the Board for Anthropological Research (BAR) expedition to Wilgena and Ooldea, South Australia during 7-21 May 1926. The expedition party included numerous BAR members.

The cinematographer was TD Campbell (AA 52). The original nitrate film is managed as 'NFSA Title No. 34189.' In 1979 the South Australian Museum Archive (SAMA) deposited its nitrate film collection with the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) for cold storage. Characteristics: 16mm, B&W, silent, duplicate positive of original 35mm nitrate, stuck in 1937.
The original 35mm nitrate managed as 'NFSA, Title No. 33555. Adelaide University Field Expedition to Central Australia. [At the Camp] Can 1 of 2.' The nitrate has deteriorated considerably since 1937 and consequently the 16mm duplicate was transferred. All of this footage is found in the final film production 'Scenes of Aboriginal Life.' Reel K has been spliced with Reel B and J which are 16mm duplicates of 35 mm nitrates shot sequences which were included in the final film production. Macumba, South Australia and Alice Springs, Northern Territory, 1926-1927. Copy of 'NFSA Title No. 33558.'

This is the first of eleven film items documenting the Board for Anthropological Research (BAR) expedition to Macumba, South Australia and Alice Springs, Northern Territory, during 30 December 1926 – 19 January 1927.

The expedition party made base camps at 'Ross Waterhole, on Macumba Station, and about 40 miles north-east of Oodnadatta; [and] Stuart Town, [Alice Springs] Central Australia.' This is the sixth of eleven film items documenting the Board for Anthropological Research (BAR) expedition to Macumba, South Australia and Alice Springs, Northern Territory, during 30 December 1926 – 19 January 1927.

The expedition party made base camps at 'Ross Waterhole, on Macumba Station, and about 40 miles north-east of Oodnadatta; [and] Stuart Town, [Alice Springs] Central Australia.' Campbell, TD and Hackett, CJ. 'Adelaide University Field Anthropology: Central Australia.' No. 1. Introduction, descriptive and anthropometric observations.' Transactions of the Royal Society of South Australia, 51 (1927), 65-75.

The cinematographer was FA Jeffery (AA 155). In 1979 the South Australian Museum Archive (SAMA) deposited its nitrate film collection with the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) for cold storage. The history of the SAMA nitrate film deposit at NFSA in 1979 has been documented in the Series Report (AA 346/9). The original nitrate film is managed as 'NFSA Title No. 33492.'

This film was shot during the BAR expedition to Ooldea, South Australia, 1926, and unlike the 35mm nitrate the 16mm copy did not deteriorate and was digitally transferred. See: (AA 346/9/1). This footage was according to a film summary (AA 346/9/27/1) inadvertently spliced with films from the BAR expedition to Macumba.

These 13 film items document the Board for Anthropological Research (BAR) expedition to Macumba, South Australia and Alice Springs, Northern Territory, during 30 December 1926 – 19 January 1927.

The expedition party made base camps at 'Ross Waterhole, on Macumba Station, and about 40 miles north-east of Oodnadatta; [and] Stuart Town, [Alice Springs] Central Australia.' The cinematographer was FA Jeffery (AA 155). The original film shot during the Macumba, SA, & Alice Springs, NT, expedition was 35mm nitrate. With the knowledge of the instability of nitrate film all early expedition films were copied to 16mm safety film in 1937. In 1979 the South Australian Museum Archive (SAMA) deposited its nitrate film collection with the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) for cold storage. The history of the SAMA nitrate film deposit at NFSA in 1979 has been documented in Series Report (AA 346/9). See (AA 346/9/2/1 - AA 346/9/2/6, AA 346/9/2/8 - AA 346/9/2/11).

It should be noted that numerous SAMA Reels are contained within some of the NFSA Titles, for example 'NFSA Title No. 33492' contains SAMA Reels H, P and A. See: (AA 346/9/2/1). It was not always possible to identify SAMA Reels definitively with NFSA Titles, the exception to this is 'SAMA Reel C' which is a 16mm duplicate of 'NFSA Title No. 33110' (AA 346/9/2/7).

Koonibba, South Australia, 1928.

This film was taken during the Board for Anthropological Research (BAR) expedition to Koonibba, South Australia during 13-25 August 1928. The expedition party included numerous BAR members.

This film was previously though not to have survived but in May 2006 this item was located during the digitisation of an unpublished film from the MacDonald Downs Expedition, titled 'A.624 81ft.' (AA 346/9/4/7)

This item contains two segments of footage relating to the Koonibba expedition, and between them is a sequence from the BAR expedition to MacDonald Downs NT, 1930, of a woman winnowing grass seeds. This MacDonald Down's footage has been cut out of the Koonibba Preservation and Access DVDs, consequently the time codes jump from 30:58 – 31:48. The 16mm film relating to the Koonibba expedition was processed, and remains within the MacDonald Downs expedition film inventory (AA 346/9/4).

'A.624 81ft.' (AA 346/9/4/7) is a 16mm positive duplicate made in 1937 of the original 35mm nitrate film. In 1979 the South Australian Museum Archive (SAMA) deposited its nitrate film collection with the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) for cold storage. The original 35mm nitrate film taken at Koonibba did not survive, and is not held by NFSA. The history of the SAMA nitrate film deposit at NFSA in 1979 has been documented in the Series Report (AA 346/9).

Much about the Koonibba expedition film remain uncertain. Cinematography is mentioned in 'Study of Aborigines: A Successful Trip.' The Advertiser 28.8.28. (See list of References at the end of the inventory), but not in the report 'Board for Anthropological Research Expedition to West Coast of South Australia.' (AA 346/3)

NB Tindale in his unpublished manuscript 'Natives of Central Aust[ralia] and the Great Western Desert: A Descriptive Account of the 16mm films of the Board for Anthropological Research' (AA 346/9/27/2) p.2, states that 'active filming' of the BAR expeditions did not begin until MacDonald Downs, 1930, which is the first expedition represented in BAR film catalogue.

The quantity of film taken at Koonibba, and the cinematographer are both unknown. There is no available evidence to suggests it was taken by TD Campbell, and NB Tindale does not list it as part of this duties. The expedition party included numerous BAR members. See the 'BAR Guide' through the Archives Access Officer for a list of personnel and their roles.

Currently this film is the entirety of footage to be identified with the BAR expedition to Koonibba in 1928.

The method adopted by BAR expeditions to undertake research and record the results involved assigning a unique number to each individual (here called 'individual subject number'). This number was given the expedition symbol as a prefix, and remained consistent throughout the research. This expedition was assigned the symbol 'D.' All individuals recorded during the expedition were assigned an individual subject number, for example [D2]. Where possible the 'individual subject number' of those who appear in film have been noted.
