This series comprises two sets of index cards. The first, stored in shoeboxes, was brought to the museum from California after Tindale's death in 1993. The second, housed in green metal drawers, remained at the museum after Tindale's retirement in the 1960s.

338/7/1/1 to 338/7/1/49 - Shoeboxes

These cards relate to a number of research concerns, including:

• general vocabulary collection (roughly 25% of items);
• South East of South Australia place name research for the Geographical Names Board (roughly 25% of items); and
• the use of vocabulary to map distributional patterns of cultural and natural phenomena across Australia (roughly 50% of items).

Tindale compiled the index cards from data he gathered in the field as well as from published literature and maps. These data were transcribed onto 7.6 x 12.6 cm index cards, and filed under tribe or subject headings. The information contained varies from card to card, depending on the particular research concern. A typical card contains a headword, a gloss, a tribe, a location and a reference. In many cases, cards contain further information about the functions of an item of material culture, mythological associations of a place name or information concerning tribal distribution, for example. If a word is drawn from the literature, it usually appears as a headword transcribed in Tindale's favoured orthographic system (IPA). It is important to appreciate, however, that this does not necessarily mean that Tindale heard the word pronounced and is thus providing a more accurate transcription.

The cards only rarely follow alphabetical order, and in which case they usually follow a particular system. For example, 'b's are filed with 'p's, 'd's with 't's and 'g's with 'k's. Tindale also used a colour coding system for many of his South East of South Australia (SE of SA) cards. Coding enabled him to move cards from one section (language) to another for comparative purposes and to assist retrieval.

Place name work led to a further peculiarity: within a single shoebox there may be two sections for a particular language: one consisting of place names and the other of general vocabulary items. This arrangement assisted Tindale in his attempts to establish English glosses and Aboriginal etymologies for place names found in the literature, on maps and in his manuscript materials. Many of the SE of SA place names are traceable to the pages of his 'Journal of Researches in the South East of S Australia' and 'Murray River Notes', and often indicate the identity of the informant (see Journals AA 338/1/33/1-3 and AA 338/1/31/1-2). The Atlas of South Australia, 1986 is an important published source for Tindale's place names.

Many of the cards contain references to information recorded on a map. See also map series AA 338/24 South East of South Australia - Hundreds and Counties.

The major portion of the shoebox files are devoted to Tindale's interest in using vocabulary to map the distributional patterns of cultural and natural phenomena across the continent (with the apparent exception of Tasmania). His research activities included tracing the distribution pattern of words for an animal (e.g., 'dingo'), a resource (e.g., 'water'), and an item of material culture (e.g., 'boomerang') (see Maps AA 338/22).

A number of cards may be classified as 'odd/working notes', and include notes on orthographic systems, informants, bibliographic references, for example. Also note that cards, such as those relating to material culture, occasionally include illustrations.

AA 338/7/2/1 to AA 338/7/2/60 - Green metal drawers

The green metal filing drawers remained at the museum after Tindale left for America in the 1960s.They contain vocabularies gathered from published literature sources and Tindale's fieldwork in many locations across Australia, and include vocabularies for particular languages as well as parallel and regional vocabularies.

'Vocabularies: Bunganditj'

This item consists of three sections.
The first section (5.5 cm) relates to work on the South East of South Australia place names project. These cards often contain English glosses, etymological, ethnological, archaeological, cartographic or other data. The second section (17 cm) is a general vocabulary, with many words drawn from Mrs J. Smith's The Booandik Tribe of South Australian Aborigines,1880, but other historical sources are also recorded. The third section (5 cm) begins with a header card reading: '25 Apr. 91 sorting, Buandik'. The following cards are mainly Bunganditj, but also include cards relating to Meintangk, Potaruwutj, Ramindjeri, Ngaiawang, Warki as well as Kaurna and tribes in the mid-north of South Australia.

'Vocabularies: Erawirung, Jarildekald'

This item consists of two main sections.
The first section (2cm) begins with a header card reading: 'Erawirung, Maraura and Ngintait', and the cards relate to Tindale's South East of South Australia place names project. A card may contain an English gloss, an etymology, and locational and ethnological information. The data is drawn from Tindale manuscript and literature sources.
The second section (10.5 cm) consists of Jarildekald material relating to the South East of South Australia place names project. Note that it has only a small number of general vocabulary cards, and these include clan names. The cards occasionally contain sociological, mythological and tribal distribution data. A note on the first 'Jarildekald' header card reads: 'the xerox copy of cards sent to the [Geographical] Names Committee is incomplete from the addition of places added here in 1987-198 ... from journals both published and my ms ones'. Another header card at the back of the section reads: 'Jarildekald (after 1988 xerox)', and is followed by a small number of cards. These notes relate to Tindale's ongoing work with the Geographical Names Board.

'Vocabulary: Jarildekald A-Ko'

Shoebox 1 of 5. This box contains the first part of a Jarildekald vocabulary compiled by Tindale. The first card in the box reads: 'this card catalogue contains all the words collected by Taplin 1879 and the alterations suggested by [Albert] Karlowan. Written in Int. Phon. System [i.e., the International Phonetic Alphabet]'. Another card notes that Taplin's main source was [James] Unaipon, a Portaulun person. Before the first alphabet divider and the start of the vocabulary proper is a small group of cards that may be considered to be in the 'to be filed' category. The vocabulary is largely derived from George Taplin's 'Vocabulary of the "Narrinyeri" Language' (in The Folklore, Manners, Customs, and Languages of the South Australian Aborigines, 1879, pp. 125-41), and Grammar of the Narrinyeri Tribe,1878. Tindale's manuscript materials are also a major source.

'Vocabularies: Kaurna'

This shoebox contains two sections of cards.
The first section (8 cm) consists chiefly of place names relating to Tindale's South East of South Australia place names project. The data is drawn from literature sources and Tindale's manuscript materials. Cards often contain an English gloss, an etymology, associated mythological or tribal distribution data, a Hundred location, or the place name may remain unlocated. The second section (8 cm) is a general vocabulary drawn from a range of literature sources and Tindale's own manuscript materials. A header card reads: 'Kaurna Tr. At present am gathering only words additional to T. & S. [Teichelmann & Schürmann]'. This section also contains notes on bibliographic sources, and the odd card from neighbouring languages, such as Narangga or Ramindjeri, occassionally appears.

'Vocabularies: Narangga, Ngadjuri'

This shoebox contains Narangga and Ngadjuri materials relating to Tindale's South East of South Australia place name project.
The Narangga section (9 cm) has two sub-sections, with the first relating to place names and the second consisting of a general vocabulary.The first header card reads: 'Narangga, Yorke Peninsula, S. Aust. Copied on to paper at 70% 22/24 July 88'. Many of the entries are drawn from published literature sources, while others relate to Tindale's work in the 1930s with Louisa Eglinton (in 1935), and later with Gladys Hughes during the Harvard and Adelaide Universities Anthropological Expedition, 1938-9 (see Journals AA 338/1/35 and AA 338/1/15/2 respectively). The Ngadjuri section (14cm) also has two sub-sections, with the first relating to place names and the second consisting of a general vocabulary. Most of the place names data are drawn from published sources, especially the Atlas of South Australia, 1986.The place name sub-section begins with a header card reading: 'vocab. Take in Noble in Taplin 1879: 142-152'. The general vocabulary sub-section begins with a header card reading: '+/- 360 from Berndt & Vogelsang 1941; +/- 80 words from N B Tindale & other sources' (see R.M. Berndt & T. Vogelsang 'Comparative vocabularies of the Ngadjuri and Dieri Tribes, South Australia', Transactions of the Royal Society of South Australia, 65(1), 1941, pp. 3-10). 'Ngaiawang (temporary)'

This shoebox contains a general vocabulary (30 cm), with nearly all entries drawn from M. Moorhouse's Vocabulary and outlines of the grammatical structure of the Murray River language, 1846. There are also occasional references to a Tindale manuscript or other published literature source. See also shoeboxes AA 338/7/1/19 and AA 338/7/1/43.

'Pitjandjara'

This shoebox contains cards relating to Tindale's Pitjandjara, Wirangu and Kokata vocabularies.
The Pitjandjara material (1.2 cm) is organised in three sections with the following header cards: Published, Manuscript Sources and Additions to Pitjandjara Vocab. The first contains bibliographic entries relating to Western Desert speech varieties; the second lists sources relating to Western Desert speech varieties (although some of those listed are published); and the third contains Jangkundjara, Pitjandjara and Ngadadjara words, mainly collected by Tindale, and relating to fieldwork in the 1930s and 1960s. There is also a small number of cards categorised as 'vocabulary data to check when next in Western Desert'. Note that Tindale's main Pitjandjara vocabulary is located in green metal drawers AA 338/7/2/3-6.
The Wirangu and Kokata cards are general vocabulary items. Firstly, there is a small number of Wirangu cards (0.4 cm), collected in 1964 at Ceduna from Robert Bowshire (80 years old).
Secondly, there is a bundle of Wirangu and Kokata paper slips bound with string (2.5 cm; approx. 6.2 x 9.8 cm slips). These slips relate to the vocabulary collated by Tindale in 1928 (see Journal AA 338/1/5).

'Vocabularies: Potaruwutj'

This shoebox contains a general vocabulary (19.5 cm). At the front of the vocabulary is a card reading: 'important note. Based on Milerum as from his mother. The words are localized as at Marcollat as best. Some were indicated as Keilira in entries where Milerum and his parents lived before 1875 in the northern part. As defined today Keilira is in great part in Meintangk territory. I should add North of to Keilira where it is used'.
The following card also carries a note. It reads: 'when worked on again see that all words are incorporated in my card file as Jarildekald. N.B. Tindale 29 Oct. 77'. In different ink is the following comment: 'reconsider this. Frank Blackmore was from SE of SA. Check Potaruwutj or Meintangk'. Milerum (aka Clarence Long) was one of Tindale's chief informants in relation to the South East of South Australia. Frank Blackmore was another of Tindale's informants. The entries in this vocabulary are drawn from published literature and Tindale manuscript sources, with the bulk of the data coming from Tindale's fieldwork. Included in the vocabulary is a small number of cards for Ngaiawang, Ngarkat, Nganguruku, Meintangk and Bunganditj tribes. Note that some words are not assigned to a tribe, just a region or place such as Padthaway, Penola or Guichen Bay.

'Vocabulary: Ramindjeri'

This shoebox contains a general vocabulary and a set of cards relating to Tindale's South East of South Australia place names project.
The general vocabulary is relatively well arranged, according to alphabetical order, and is drawn primarily from H. A. E Meyer's Vocabulary of the Langauge Spoken by the Aborigines of South Australia, 1843, which Tindale transcribes using his preferred orthographic system. Some entries are referenced to Tindale manuscript materials, with Reuben Walker and, to a lesser extent, Albert Karlowan and Milerum (aka Clarence Long) figuring as significant contributors. Words from other languages, such as Bunganditj, Erawirung, Marditjali (Victoria), Ngaiawang, Nganguruku, Nukunu, Portaulun and Warki also appear in the vocabulary on colour coded cards.
The cards relating to Tindale's place names project are found at the back of the vocabulary under a separate 'Ramindjeri' header card (4.5 cm). The cards often contain English glosses, Aboriginal etymologies, ethnological, archaeological, cartographic or other data.These data are drawn from a range of published literature and Tindale manuscript sources. Again, Reuben Walker, Albert Karlowan and Milerum are major sources.

'Vocabulary: S.E. of S. Aust., A - Ko'

This shoebox contains a section of a general vocabulary drawn from a number of languages in the South East of South Australia. The cards, many of which are colour coded, include entries for: Bunganditj; Erawirung; Maraura; Meintangk; Ngadjuri; Ngaiawang; Nganguruku; Peramangk; Portaulun; Ramindjeri and Warki. There are also a few words from Victoria and New South Wales. The vocabulary draws on a wide variety of published literature and Tindale manuscript sources. It appears that Tindale did not complete the collation of this particular vocabulary, as sections relating to L-Z have not been located.

'Vocabularies M - P'

This shoebox contains vocabularies for the following South East of South Australia tribes: Bunganditj, Maraura, Meintangk, Ngaiawang, Nganguruku, Ngaralta, Ngarkat, Ngawait, Nukunu, Peramangk and Portaulun. Here is a brief summary of each vocabulary:

• 'Bunganditj' (1.8 cm)
  There is no header card for this section, which is found at the front of the shoebox. The main source is Mrs J. Smith's Booandik tribe of South Australian Aborigines, 1880;
• 'Maraura' (0.1 cm)
  There are only three cards drawn from Tindale's manuscript materials;
• 'Meintangk' (2.5 cm)
  The main source for these cards is Tindale's manuscripts materials: Alf Watson and Milerum (aka Clarence Long) are frequently listed as sources. Many entries deal with place names, and would appear to relate to the South East of South Australia place names project. Cards often contain English glosses, Aboriginal etymologies, ethnological, archaeological, cartographic or other data;
• 'Ngaiawang' (3.5 cm)
  These cards are drawn from a range of 19th century literature sources, but there is also an occasional entry drawn from Tindale's manuscript sources;
• 'Nganguruku' (2.6 cm)
  The bulk of these cards draw on Tindale's manuscript materials, with Robert Mason a major source. The cards consist of general vocabulary, with many cards containing ethnological data;
• 'Ngaralta' (0.1 cm)
  There are three cards drawn from Tindale's manuscript sources;
• 'Ngarkat' (0.2 cm)
  These cards drawn from Tindale's manuscript and literature sources;
• 'Ngawait' (0.2 cm)
  These cards drawn mainly from Tindale's manuscript sources;
• 'Nukunu' (0.2 cm)
  These cards are drawn mainly from literature sources;
• 'Peramangk' (0.4 cm)
  These cards are drawn from Tindale's manuscript and literature sources; and
• 'Portaulun' (1.2 cm)
  Many of these cards are drawn from Tindale's manuscript materials (per Karlowan), with some also drawn from literature sources.

'Vocabulary: S.E. of S. Australia'

There are two main types of information in this shoebox. On the one hand, there are words from a range of South East of South Australia languages compiled under subject headings. Many of these cards are colour coded. Secondly, there are cards relating more to reseach methods, such as spelling systems, Tindale's informants' biographical details and bibliographic listings. Cards include:

• 'Spelling systems' (0.6 cm).
  The cards in this section contain notes on the orthographic systems used by various authors, including a number of literature sources Tindale draws on in compiling his index card files. A number of cards appear to contain working notes for Tindale's Jarildekald vocabulary (AA 338/7/1/7-11);
• 'Tribal Designations in SE of SA area also collective terms for clans' (1.4 cm)
  Many of these cards relate to the names of languages and the names of tribes, including alternative names applied by others (exonyms). Some cards also include tribal distribution data. Drawn from both Tindale's manuscript and published literature sources.This section also includes a key to the colour coding system;
• 'Kinship'
  This section is empty; there is only the header card;
• 'Maps'
  This section contains one card containing a short list of 'maps described and place name cards written';
• 'Moiety' (0.6 cm)
  This section contains moiety terms relating mainly to the South East of South Australia, although data from neighbouring areas of New South Wales and Victoria, as well as Western Australia, are also present;
• 'Beings' (1.4 cm)
  A note on the header card reads: 'Check also in General file under Beings'. These cards describe mythological beings in varying grades of detail. A card may include a meaning, a reference to the 'story' it originates from, and associations with a particular place. These cards are drawn largely from Tindale's manuscript materials, but also from published literature sources;
• 'Kin terms' (3 cm)
  The first card contains the note: 'Kinship terms of SE of SA. Note that kin terms are all through main vocabulary, collect them here'. These cards occassionally contain specific genealogical or associated ethnological information. A few cards relating to south-western Australia are included;
• 'Person's English name' (3.0 cm)
  Header card contains the note: 'Index by personal name if given. Try & link with native name by cross reference & indicate on card this has been done [tick] in bottom right'. Many cards contain biographical or genealogical details of people from the 19th and early 20th centuries, including Tindale's informants;
• 'Person's Native name' (2.5 cm)
  The header card contains a note about cross referencing with any English name, and a note about Tindale's filing methods: 'D indexed with T, B indexed with P'. These names are drawn from published literature sources as well as, to a lesser extent, Tindale's manuscript materials;
• 'Seasons SE of SA'
  The header card contains the note: 'See general file for Bunganditj, Jarildekald'. This section contains only 1 card;
• 'Bibliog.' (0.2 cm)
  These cards list literature sources relating to the South East of South Australia. Most of the cards refer to contributions to Taplin's The Folklore, Manners, Customs, and Languages of the South Australian Aborigines, 1879;
• 'Suffixes' (0.4 cm)
  These cards contain place name and other spatial suffixes from New South Wales languages, such as Eora, Kamilaroi, Weilwan and Wiradjuri. Drawn from literature sources;
• 'Words needed' (0.1cm)
  These cards do not have a headword. They do, however, carry an English gloss, a tribe, a location and a source;
• 'Social Org.'
  This section is empty. The header card reads: 'Must check McCourt & Mincham 1977, Two notable S. Australians, pp. 86 & 87 (for moiety & totemic animal names)'; and
• 'To determine' (0.1 cm)
  This section contains two place name cards for Bunganditj and Erawirung.

'English of S.E. of S.A. Vocabularies'

This shoebox consists of three main sections.

• 'English - SE of SA Vocab' (24 cm)
  This section consists of a vocabulary for the South East of South Australia, filed alphabetically according to an English gloss. This section follows a different format to Tindale's other index card files. The cards are divided into six sections, with one or more languages assigned to a particular section. The first card in the shoebox is a code card explaining Tindale's system. The code card also carries the note: 'unpublished original vocabularies arranged according to English'. The majority of entries relate to Tangane and Potaruwutj, but there are also entries for languages such as: Bunganditj, Maraura, Meintangk, Ngarkat, Peramangk, Ramindjeri and Jarildekald. Tindale usually provides a journal reference on each card. A variety of handwriting styles are evident and it is not entirely clear whether or not they all belong to Tindale.
• 'Not Clasif.' (2.7 cm)
  This section contains unsorted cards relating to Tindale's South East of South Australia vocabulary. A second header card reading: 'need study. These words have not been transferred to my main catalogue. They need further consideration' directly follows the sectional header card.
• 'English-Jarildekald' (2.7 cm)
  The head card of this section carries the note: 'Taplin 1879 Folklore pp. 125-141. In this list the corrections are in Int. Phon. By NB Tindale. There is a Jarildekald/English vocabulary all in Int. Phon. Compiled by N.B. Tindale [signed] May 1971'. Another note reads: 'These native words were given to Taplin largely by [James] Unaipon who was Portaulun: we could not understand him (Taplin) properly even as boys, Karloan 12.1935'. This section consists of photocopied sections of Taplin's Narrinyeri vocabulary mounted on index cards with Tindale's annotations. There are 80 cards as numbered by Tindale. (See Taplin's The Folklore, Manners, Customs, and Languages of the South Australian Aborigines,1879).

'Words from N. B. Tindale's SE of SA Journals to be evaluated and inserted in Master vocab.'

This shoebox contains two main sections.
The cards in the first section (13.5 cm) have been drawn from Tindale's manuscript materials and remain at an early stage of preparation: they contain only an Aboriginal word and a reference to one of Tindale's journals (AA 338/1/31/1 and AA338/1/33/1-2 are commonly cited). A working note on yellow paper about 4 cm in reads: 'working place May 1990. Vol.2 keep in order of pages where possible. I did not find these cards for V.2 until I had already worked to p.54. I will use them whenever possible. They were typed early in my Place name work'. Further working notes at the back of the section suggest that 'Vol.2' is volume two of Tindale’s 'Journal of Researches in the South East of S. Australia' (AA 338/1/33/2).The second section contains a number of cards under the header 'To be sorted' (5 cm). Most of the latter entries are string-bound bibliographic cards (4.4 cm).

'Vocabulary: Tangane'

This shoebox contains a general vocabulary drawn in the main from Tindale's manuscript materials. Before the vocabulary proper are a number of header cards and a small section of vocabulary cards.The header cards read: 'Tangane', 'Tangane alphabet inserts' (followed by two divider cards labelled 'A' and 'J' respectively) and 'Reindexed to here'. The latter header card is followed by a set of cards (1.2 cm) in alphabetical order, mostly drawn from Tindale's own sources, and apparently awaiting insertion into the vocabulary proper. Of interest is a card which reads: 'Tanganekald: remember that the words in the 2 song papers have not yet been inserted in the vocabulary'. The note goes on the describe desirable orthographic changes to be made. In the vocabulary proper, most of the entries are drawn from Tindale's own fieldwork. Many are drawn from songs (published by Tindale in 'Native songs of the South East of South Australia', Transactions and Proceedings of the Royal Society of South Australia, Vol.LXI, 1937, pp. 107-20), others relate to place names, and many are rich in ethnological information. Items of material culture are occassionally illustrated. Tindale's main source was Milerum (aka Clarence Long). Note also that an occasional Potaruwutj, Ngarkat and Bungaditj entry appears.

This shoebox contains four sections marked by header cards: 'Foreign words series', 'Tribal names', 'Aranda' and 'Nihon'. There is an additional unmarked section at the front of the shoebox.

• 'Unmarked section' (1.1 cm)
  This section contains a few cards relating to population density (0.1 cm) and a number of general vocabulary cards (1 cm), drawn from G. F. Angas's South Australia Illustrated, 1847. These cards are string bound.
• 'Foreign words series' (0.1 cm)
  These cards relate to words borrowed from English into Karanguru (SA).
• 'Tribal names' (1.5 cm)
  Only a few cards in this section relate to tribal names (0.1 cm), and these refer to tribes of New South Wales and Western Australia. The remaining cards (this is apparently Tindale's 'odd' category) contain bibliographic entries, archaeological references, a note on phonetics and vocabulary items.
• 'Aranda' (5.2 cm)
  This section includes cards (3.3 cm) containing Aranda and Iliaura relationship terms and cards (1.9 cm) containing illustrations of tjuringa markings. These cards relate to Tindale's fieldwork at MacDonald Downs in 1930 and at Mt Liebig in 1932, respectively. Note that in the latter set of cards, both Arunta and Luritja designs are included.
• 'Nihon' (3.4 cm)
  The cards in this section are filed under English subject headword.

The cards contain a headword that is the Aboriginal equivalent for 'dog' or slight variation, such as 'dog, tame' or 'dog, wild'. Mostly drawn from literature sources, but some are from Tindale's manuscript materials. The cards are reasonably well organised in alphabetical order. There is also a small number of cards (0.5 cm), mainly bibliographic, at the front of the box.

'Fire'

The cards compiled in this box relate to Tindale's concern with using vocabulary to map distributional patterns of cultural and natural phenomena across Australia. The cards, drawn from many Aboriginal languages, contain a headword that is the equivalent for 'fire'. The cards are reasonably well organised in alphabetical order. The 'Ngaiawang' header card carries the note: 'I have a card file of Naiawang - the words herein are chiefly additions from researches by N. B. Tindale & ones noted in the literature'. Most of the cards appearing in the second section are colour coded and are drawn from M. Moorhouse's Vocabulary and outlines of the grammatical structure of the Murray River language, 1846.
• 'Nganguruku' (2.4 cm)
  Most of the place names contained in this section are drawn from Tindale's manuscript materials, with Robert Mason a prominent informant. Cards often contain etymological, ethnological or geographical notes. Entries range from specific (such as a rockhole) to more general (such as a hordal territory on the bank of the river). A small number are drawn from the Atlas of South Australia, 1986.
• 'Ngaralta' (1.6 cm)
  Some entries relate to the name of a clan and the general location of their territory. Place names are often located with reference to a Hundred and some are drawn from the Atlas of South Australia, 1986. Among Tindale's informants are Albert Karlowan and Pinkie Mack.
• 'Ngarkat' (3 cm)
  Entries are drawn from Tindale's manuscript materials and published literature sources. Of the latter, the Atlas of South Australia, 1986, is notable. Note that some entries relate to the names of clans. Cards often contain etymological, ethnological or geographical notes.
• 'Ngawait' (1 cm)
  Entries are drawn from Tindale's manuscript materials and published literature sources, including the Atlas of South Australia, 1986. Notably, there is much repetition, with many of the cards relating to only four places.
• 'Nukunu' (1.1 cm)
  Many of the place names are drawn from the Atlas of South Australia, 1986 and other literature sources. Cards also includes some general vocabulary (often resource-related) that were presumably used for finding etymologies for place names.
• 'Peramangk' (1.2 cm)
  The first card reads: 'Peramangk place names have chiefly come down to us through members of other tribes who for one reason or another - marital links, mythical stories or other circumstance have been able to tell of them'. Entries are drawn from Tindale's manuscript materials and published literature sources, including the Atlas of South Australia, 1986.
• 'Danggali' (0.4 cm)
  The first card reads: 'The absence of native place names in the Danggali tribal area is regrettable but the Nanya clan people were never interrogated as to their language and they avoided contact with Westerners. It will be noticed therefore that the stations in their country almost without exception have Western names, whereas as the Ngadjuri occupied by Westerners with the help of aborigines had [?] many such places'. • 'Portaulun' (1.2 cm)
  Most of the cards in this section contain place names drawn from Tindale's manuscript materials, with Karlowan a major informant. Cards often contain a gloss and an etymology. Many cards show a concern for localising places.
• 'Need Evaluation or Localization' (1.3 cm)
  This is a mixed and varied group of cards. A number of cards relate to names for Kangaroo Island in mainland languages. Other cards are merely working notes, and include bibliographic references and information on tribal boundaries.
• 'Kangaroo I.' (1 card, but see preceding category)
• 'To Sort' (4.2 cm)
  This section contains cards in various states of development, many carrying little or vague information. Most of the cards relate to place names, but some relate to tribal or clan names. The cards in this shoebox relate to Tindale's South East of South Australia place names project. There is one header card: 'Tanganekald'. A card may include the following types of information: a gloss, an etymology, ethnographic details (e.g., mythological), location (e.g., distance from a landmark or reference to a Hundred), or observation re tribal/clan boundaries and limits. 'Potaruwutj Place Names: SE of S. Australia, N.B. Tindale ms'

The cards in this shoebox relate to Tindale's South East of South Australia place names project. Most of the cards (4 cm) are well ordered alphabetically (following Tindale's particular system), suggesting that they are in a more finished form than some of the other sections of the place names card collection. The remaining cards at the back of the group appear to be unsorted. Most entries are drawn from Tindale's manuscript materials, with Milerum (Clarence Long) and Alf Watson appearing as major sources. Note that Tindale often indicates whether a place is close to a clan or tribal boundary, and often describes the type of physical feature denoted. Also, cards often include data on tribes and boundaries (e.g., ethnonyms and camping places). See maps AA338/24/112-113, County Cardwell.

Aranda, Central Australia

Drawer 1 of 2. The cards in this drawer are the first part (A-R) of Tindale's English translation of an Aranda/Luritja/German vocabulary provided to him by Rev. H. A. Heinrich at Hermannsburg in 1929. (Heinrich had been, for many years, a school teacher at the mission). According to Tindale the vocabulary contained 2600 Arunta and 1400 Luritja words (see journal AA 338/1/2, 'Diary of Researches 1922-1930', p.338). The first alphabet divider card contains the note: 'Hermannsburg ms. received 1929 by N.B. Tindale with German text - translated by him'. Tindale received some assistance with the German-English translation from H. K. Fry (see journal AA 338/1/2, 'Diary of Researches 1922-1930', p.345). A typical card carries an Aranda headword and an English gloss, although a number of cards contain a Kukatja (Luritja) headword and there are occassional supplementary entries drawn from Tindale's manuscript materials. It would appear that less than one third of the original 4000 entries appear in this vocabulary.
