Description

This series contains photographic material that is supplementary to Norman Barnett Tindale's field notes and expedition journals from 1921 to 1991. Currently there are only 46 processed volumes of photographic images acquired by Tindale from 1921 to 1957. The remaining part of the photographic collection has yet to be processed. This includes: unsorted loose photographic and contact prints; photograph albums; slides etc., relating to Tindale's expeditions from 1957 onwards; overseas travels and visits to museums; personal photographs as well as copies of photographs from various publications.

The processed photographs relate to various research expeditions across Australia in which Tindale participated in including those under the auspices of the Board for Anthropological Research (see AA 346). The photographic material supports Tindale's work in the areas of social and physical anthropology, ethnography, archaeology, botany and entomology.

A great number of photographs have been annotated by Tindale himself. The annotations provide essential data about image, location and date, and often refer to corresponding journals. For that reason the annotations are treated as a primary source of information on the inventory level (AA 338/5/1 - AA 338/5/21). Each inventory item contains a detailed list of the photographs. In the summary of each inventory item there is a key to abbreviations which Tindale used in his annotations. The photographs are organised in volumes according to expeditions, and follow the chronological order of Tindale's journals where possible. The names of Australian Aboriginal groups have been cross-referenced with Tindale's 'Tribe index' which links to the catalogue in his 1974 publication: 'Aboriginal Tribes of Australia, the terrain, environmental controls, distribution limits and proper names'.

The photographic material appears in the following formats: photographic and contact prints, 35 mm film negatives, acetate negatives and positives, nitrate negatives, mounted photographs, transparencies. While a large number of these images are original there are also multiple copies which have accumulated over time. For the purpose of archival preservation, some of the photograph albums (originally put together by Tindale) have been disassembled, cross-referenced, and collated with loose duplicates and placed in archival folders or boxes.

Users are warned that some photographs in this collection may contain images and written descriptions that might be culturally sensitive. The gender specific images are not listed but they are placed in separate volumes marked as 'Restricted'.

Inventory Listing

AA 338/5/1

Photographs relating to Groote Eylandt and Roper River Expedition, 1921-1922.

Supplementary to 'Journey to Groote Eylandt. 1921-1922.' (AA 338/1/1-3).

The item AA 338/5/1 consists of five volumes of the photographic images pertaining to Norman B Tindale's expedition to Groote Eylandt 1921-1922, Northern Territory, Australia. Although Tindale's first expedition, namely Groote Eylandt, involved ethnographic and entomological fieldwork, the images in these five volumes mostly reflect the cultural and social milieu of Groote Eylandt (Northern Territory) people including components of their material culture and ceremonial life. The issues captured by these images thus reflect Tindale's early anthropological work.

The majority of these photographs were taken by Tindale himself during his stay at Groote Eylandt and his visits to surrounding islands and Roper River between 1921-1922. However, some of the photographs have been provided by various sources: Rev. HE Warren (Tindale's associate during his examination of Groote Eylandt Archipelago 1921-1922); AJ Dyer and Mrs Dyer of the Church Missionary Society that provided numerous notes on Nungubuyu people and Ingura women; RD Joynt; Mr ECH Lousada; L Perriman and H Wilking. Although it was intended for this item to include Tindale's photographs only, it became apparent, in the process of collating the images, that the photographs taken by the abovementioned sources do belong to NB Tindale's photographic collection. Those images had been provided or taken for Tindale's research work, publication or personal use. Due to this material, some of the photographs are dated prior to and beyond 1922, as late as 1933.

The item AA 338/5/1/Vol. 1-5 consists of mainly black and white (b/w) photographic prints, contact prints obtained from the corresponding acetate negatives, some b/w 35 mm films and a very few slides. It is apparent that many of the images have been reproduced over a period of time so that numerous duplicates of the particular image are present (throughout volumes). Some of the prints are of a later date while others appear to be originals. Most of the background information about the photographs was easily obtained via NB Tindale's annotations on the prints. In some cases it was necessary to rely on the Groote Eylandt journals or the relevant published material. In the detailed list of photographs, NB Tindale’s captions are used as an image title. In the cases of duplicates, the captions on the prints that provide most exhaustive information about the image were used as a primary source, while other annotations were quoted as an 'alternative annotation(s)'. A numbering system has been imposed onto the inventory items by the South Australian Museum Archives.

As supplementary material to the corresponding journals, (see 'Journey to Groote Eylandt 1921-1922', AA 338/1/1-3) the photographs have been collated in the manner that reflects the journals' chronological structure. Concurrently, the abovementioned arrangement also intended to make a distinction between the sources of photographs. This has resulted, as previously mentioned, in five volumes of numbered photographic material in the following order:

  • Vol. 1, containing photographs 1-136 (AA 338/5/1/1-136)
This volume consists of mainly b/w photographic prints taken by Tindale. The majority of images are organised in chronological order, with the exception of those photographs that have been found at a later stage of organising the photographic collection and thus have been placed out of the sequential order in the archival folders.
Date range: 1921-1922. (and 1907, see the lists of photographs below, photograph no. 1)
  • Vol. 2, containing photographs 137-200 (AA 338/5/1/137-200)
This volume is a continuation of the Vol. 1, Tindale's photographs. The folder contains photographs 137-143. The remaining numbering capacity, 144-200 namely, has been left blank for the additional photographs that eventually might appear in the process of sorting out the collection.
    Date range: 1921 and undated
  • Vol. 3, containing photographs 201-270 (AA 338/5/1/201-270)
This volume contains photographs taken by sources other than Tindale. They are: RD Joynt, ECH Lousada, L Perriman, H Wilking, AJ Dyer, HW Warren. The actual contents of the folder are photographs numbered 201-250.
    Date range: 1920-1933
  • Vol. 4, containing photographs 271-298 (AA 338/5/1/271-298)
This volume consists of b/w photographic prints containing images of a restricted and/or culturally sensitive nature. The actual content of the folder are photographs numbered 271-287. The photographs were taken by NB Tindale, RD Joynt, ECH Lousada.
  • Vol. 5, containing photographs 299-317 (AA 338/5/1/299-317)
The last volume of this item, Vol. 5, includes photographs numbered as above. However, the remaining content of the volume are duplicates of the images from the previous volumes, including Vol. 4. For further details about this volume see under detailed list of photographs, Vol. 5.

Please note Tindale's abbreviations/acronyms: N.T., N Terr (Northern Territory); Qun; Qu. (Queensland) I (Island as in Bickerton Island) Gr. Is., Groote Is, Groote E. Photographs relating to Cape York, North Queensland Expedition, 1926-1927.

Supplementary to 'Journal of a Museum Trip to Cape York Peninsula, North Queensland by Norman B. Tindale. Nov. 1926 - March 1927. Adelaide, S.A'. (AA338/1/4).

This item includes two volumes of photographic material consisting of b/w photographic prints, contact prints and acetate negatives. The photographic material is supplementary to Norman Barnett Tindale's 'Journal of a Museum Trip to Cape York Peninsula North Queensland Nov. 1926-March 1927' (AA 338/1/4). The expedition was led by Herbert Mathew Hale (see AA 124) and was authorised by the Board of Governors on 3 November 1926. The journey commenced on 7 December of the same year. On the way to Flinders Island, the party stopped in Melbourne, Sidney, Brisbane, Cairns and Kurranda. Photographs from these locations are available in Vol. 2 of this item. Vol. 1 contains photographs taken at Flinders Island, Stanley Island, Bathurst Head, Barrow Point, Port Stewart, Stewart River, and Princess Charlotte Bay.

The aim of the expedition was to collect entomological, zoological and anthropological data. The anthropological research concerning the indigenous population in the area included records on: groups, their languages and boundaries; social organisation and totems, marriage, burial, and mourning customs, initiation and ceremonial life; material culture, weapons and canoes, and so forth. Some recordings were made on the subject of physical anthropology, however, no detailed measurements of people were obtained.

The photographs collated in the two volumes of this item are illustrations of the abovementioned activities with particular focus on the expedition party's work between January 1927 and March 1927. A number of these photographs were published in Herbert M Hale's and Norman B Tindale's 'Aborigines of Princess Charlotte Bay, North Queensland Pt. 1', Records of the South Australian Museum. 5(1):64-116, and 'Aborigines of Princess Charlotte Bay, North Queensland, Pt. 2', Records of the South Australian Museum. 5(2):117-172. These publications were used to provenance unidentified photographs. Some photographs were previously identified by an unknown person as relevant to the Cape York expedition. As there were no further references available, this identification has been accepted as a correct one.

During the Cape York expedition NB Tindale and HM Hale recorded their first motion picture: 'Natives of Princess Charlotte Bay, 1927, N. Q. ', reels 1 - 2. There are copies available in the South Australian Museum Archives.

Please note Tindale's abbreviations: Pr. C. Bay, Pr. Charlotte Bay (Princess Charlotte Bay); I, Is (Island); Pt (Port as in Port Stewart and Point as in Barrow Point); Mack R. (Mack River); Q, Qu (Queensland); NQ., N.Q. (North Queensland); W (West); Jan (January); Feb (February); Tr. (Tribe); Fig. (Figure); Dup (Duplicate); pubd (published).
