Description

THIS SERIES CONTAINS RESTRICTED MATERIAL
This series consists of 7 x 3 inch magnetic reel to reel tapes, recorded by Peter M Rice at Musgrave Park (Amata, SA) in 1963, and 2 x 5 inch museum copy reels. All reels have been transferred to CD.The recordings contain restricted materials relating to the Pitjantjatjara Kangaroo ceremony.

Rice worked as a Welfare Officer at the Adelaide office of the South Australian Department Aboriginal Affairs. In October 1963 he travelled to Musgrave Park to witness living conditions on the North-West Aboriginal Reserve. During his short stay, Rice travelled to Mt Davies (SA) with Patrol Officer Bob Verburgt, where he recorded parts of a Kangaroo ceremony. According to Verburgt, Rice returned to Musgrave Park and probably recorded further tapes with Tommy Dodd there.
