'Alphabetical index of toas'

This item contains an 8 page photocopy of a typescript alphabetical index of toas with Reuther's numbering system. Annotations include the South Australian Museum's numbering system as well as corrections.

This item contains two copies of a black and white photographic print of watercolours of toas 1-41.

South Australian Museum memorandum relating to the 'purchase of specimens'

This item contains a carbon copy memorandum dated 20 August 1970 from the then Curator of Archaeology, Graeme Lloyd Pretty (AA 255), to the Director, Grant Inglis, recommending that the South Australian Museum purchase a set of 34 illustrations by Henry Hillier from Oscar Reuther, Johann's son. The set includes the original toa watercolours which Rosa Fiveash (SAMA 970) copied for the Sir Edward Charles Stirling (see AA 309) and Edgar Ravenswood Waite (see AA 356) publication titled 'Description of Toas or Australian Aboriginal Direction Signs' published in Records of the South Australian Museum, Vol. 1, No. 2, 30 August 1919 (see AA 266/2/1/24).

A pencil note on the first page reads 'These have all been figured in their respect[ive] colours but Mr Reuther has the plates lent to some one for inspection but will soon get them again'.

Mura-Mura index cards

This item contains 43 printed index cards arranged by Mura-Mura. Each card includes the Mura-Mura, Reuther's vocabulary number, word, place name, map reference and language group handwritten in ink. The remaining 77 printed cards, 76 of which have a Mura-Mura handwritten in the top left hand corner. The columns for A: [specimen number], locality, donor or collector, remarks, date and store have been left blank.

'TOAS Duplicates, Broken and Unidentifiable'

This items contains the following handwritten papers and cards: note stating [toas] 'not checked or Toas not identified; 32 descriptions of toas on individual pages in ink and 15 index cards with varying toa information, some of which are included on the not checked list; a note stating 'Misc.Toas Found Unregistered May 1964'; 'Still not traced as at 16/6/1964'; and '4 TOAS taken out for exchange with New Zealand 28-7-22'. The descriptions have been annotated in pencil.
